How it is built.
Material cause
Hyle: what it is made of
Travertino Romano (Lazio), honed. Pores left open on the column, filled and honed inside the basin; penetrating sealer. Unlacquered brass drain.
Formal cause
Morphē: its form and measure
36" H (comfort counter height) × 18" D, on a stepped plinth about 22" square. Shell basin about 16" across, 5" deep. Twenty flutes that twist through a quarter turn. Column cored hollow for the drain and P-trap.
Efficient cause
The Guild's makers: who makes it, and how
Stone carver. Saw the block, core-drill the centre, rough out (CNC allowed), carve the twist, shell ribs and lip by hand, hone. Weighs several hundred pounds; check the floor.
Final cause
The client's use: what it is for
A powder-room fountain: water runs where the stone already seems to flow. Paired with an unlacquered brass wall-mounted faucet.

- Can you carve twenty flutes that twist through a quarter turn, and the shell ribs and lip by hand (CNC roughing allowed)?
- Can you leave the pores open on the column, fill and hone them inside the basin, and finish with a penetrating sealer?
